Pregnancy Confirmation: What Comes Next for You and Your Baby

Posted on February 20, 2026 by Inception Fertility

Finding out you’re pregnant is one of life’s biggest moments — whether you’ve been trying for a while or this is brand-new territory. After that positive test, many of our patients wonder, “What happens now?” At NYU Langone Fertility Center, we walk our patients through the earliest steps of pregnancy, providing clarity, confidence, and compassionate guidance from the start.

Step 1: Confirming Pregnancy With Bloodwork

Home pregnancy tests are a great first indicator, but only a blood test can confirm your pregnancy with precision. At NYULFC, we measure beta-hCG, a hormone that rises steadily in early pregnancy.

Why this matters:

  • Ensures accurate confirmation

  • Helps detect early complications

  • Establishes your baseline numbers for monitoring

Step 2: Early Ultrasound (Around 6–7 Weeks)

Once your levels rise appropriately, we schedule an early ultrasound — usually between weeks six and seven. This is when we can visualize the gestational sac, yolk sac, and eventually the fetal heartbeat.

What you can expect:

  • A transvaginal ultrasound

  • A clear explanation of everything we’re seeing on screen

  • Time for your questions about symptoms, timing, and next steps

Step 3: Reviewing Your Medications and Prenatal Care

If you conceived with fertility treatment, you may remain on medications like progesterone during early pregnancy. Our team will guide you through how long to continue, dose adjustments, and what to expect symptom-wise.

You’ll also begin or continue:

  • Prenatal vitamins

  • Low-dose aspirin when recommended

  • Lifestyle guidance to support a healthy first trimester

Step 4: Transitioning to Your OB/GYN

Around 8–10 weeks, most NYULFC patients “graduate” from fertility care and transition to their OB/GYN for routine prenatal care. We share your full treatment and pregnancy summary so your next provider has everything they need.

NYC Tip:

Appointments fill quickly throughout the city. Book with your OB/GYN early so you’re set for that crucial first-trimester visit.

Step 5: Knowing Your Team Is With You

Early pregnancy comes with plenty of emotions — excitement, relief, anxiety, all of it. At NYULFC, we make sure you never navigate those early weeks alone. From bloodwork to ultrasounds to reassurance between appointments, we’re with you through every milestone.
