Male Fertility Tests: Semen Analysis & Beyond
Male fertility plays an essential role in conception. At NYU Langone Fertility Center, we offer comprehensive male fertility evaluations designed to pinpoint issues early and provide clear guidance forward.
What a Semen Analysis Measures
A semen analysis is the foundational test for understanding male fertility. It evaluates:
-
Sperm concentration: How many sperm are present
-
Motility: How well sperm move
-
Morphology: How sperm are shaped
-
Volume & pH: Overall health of the ejaculate
-
Liquefaction time: How quickly semen becomes fluid
This test alone can reveal many of the most common factors contributing to male infertility.
How the Collection Works
Patients can produce a specimen onsite in our private collection rooms or at home (with proper timing and instructions). Our andrology lab analyzes the sample that same day for accuracy and reliability.
When Additional Testing Is Needed
Sometimes, we need more insight. Further evaluations may include:
Hormone Testing
Bloodwork measuring:
-
FSH
-
LH
-
Testosterone
-
Prolactin
These reveal how the testes and pituitary gland are functioning.
Genetic Testing
Recommended if sperm count is very low or absent. It looks for:
-
Y-chromosome microdeletions
-
Karyotype abnormalities
-
CFTR mutations (related to congenital absence of the vas deferens)
Why Early Testing Matters
Male fertility accounts for roughly half of all infertility cases. The sooner we identify concerns, the sooner we can create an effective pathway — whether that’s lifestyle changes, medication, surgical correction, or tailored treatment like IUI or IVF with ICSI.
NYULFC’s Integrated Approach
Our andrology specialists work side‑by‑side with reproductive endocrinologists and embryologists, giving patients a seamless, comprehensive experience. From your first semen analysis to advanced diagnostics, we ensure clarity, support, and the most effective plan forward.
