How Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Impacts Conception

FSH: A Key Hormone in Reproductive Health

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) plays a critical role in the menstrual cycle and fertility. Produced by the pituitary gland, FSH stimulates ovarian follicles to mature—making it essential for ovulation and conception.

At NYU Langone Fertility Center, we use FSH testing as part of a comprehensive evaluation. Here’s what you need to know.

What Does FSH Do?

  • Stimulates growth of ovarian follicles

  • Supports estrogen production

  • Prepares the body for ovulation

Without adequate FSH activity, follicles may not mature properly, which can impact fertility.

FSH Testing: What It Reveals

FSH is typically measured on day 2–4 of the menstrual cycle. Results help assess:

  • Ovarian reserve: Higher FSH may indicate reduced egg supply.

  • Menopausal transition: Elevated levels can signal diminished ovarian function.

  • Treatment planning: Guides medication dosing for IVF stimulation.

Interpreting FSH Levels

  • Normal range: Generally 3–10 mIU/mL (varies by lab)

  • Elevated (>10–12): May suggest lower ovarian reserve

  • Very high (>20): Often associated with menopause or severe diminished reserve

FSH is one piece of the puzzle—AMH and antral follicle count provide additional insight.

FSH and IVF

Patients with elevated FSH can still achieve pregnancy, but treatment may require:

  • Higher medication doses

  • Alternative protocols

  • Consideration of donor eggs in some cases

Our team uses individualized strategies based on your full hormonal profile.

Next Steps
